WORLD IN BRIEF : LIBERIA : Rebel Attack on Monrovia Charged

Shelling and gunfire erupted in a Monrovia suburb, and Liberia’s interim government said West African peacekeeping troops had fought off an attack by two rebel armies. A government statement accused Charles Taylor’s National Patriotic Front of Liberia of an “unprovoked and cowardly attack” on the capital. The statement said that fighters loyal to rival rebel leader Prince Johnson also joined the attack.
