GOLF ROUNDUP : Janzen Off Fast With 62
Lee Janzen opened with an eagle Thursday and went on to shoot a career-best, 10-under-par 62 for a two-stroke lead after the first round of the $1-million Disney Golf Classic at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The score matched the best this season on the men’s tour and was one off the record for the Magnolia Course.
Janzen, 28, was six under after five holes.
“After the first five holes, I was hoping not to make a par,” Janzen said. “The eagle completely changed my day, but I still wasn’t expecting to shoot 62.”
Defending champion Mark O’Meara, Payne Stewart and Andrew Magee were two shots back.
“I’m just happy to be off to a good start,” said O’Meara, who shot a 64 in last year’s final round to take the $180,000 winner’s purse.
Nolan Henke, journeyman Frank Conner, J.P. Hayes and Duffy Waldorf were three shots off the lead.
Conner, an Austrian native playing out of San Antonio, has never won in 18 seasons on the tour. He was tied with O’Meara until a bogey on the final hole.
It was a breeze for Fred Couples and Davis Love III, but Tom Kite had a scare as the top-seeded United States defeated New Zealand, 3-0, on the opening day of Dunhill Cup team competition at St. Andrew’s, Scotland.
Couples and Love both shot 70, despite a stiff breeze that dropped the wind-chill factor to barely above freezing. Couples’ opponent, Frank Nobilo, lost by five strokes and Craig Waite shot a 76 and lost to Love by six.
Kite, who led by seven after eight holes, hung on to his one-stroke lead going to the 18th, where Greg Turner drove out of bounds and finished with a bogey. He shot 73 to Kite’s 71.
There were no upsets in other first-round matches. Advancing were Ireland, Spain, England, Scotland, Sweden, Australia and South Africa.
