Sierra Madre : Brighter Street Lights
The City Council has agreed to the use of brighter street lights in a small area downtown as a test of merchant acceptance.
Some downtown merchants have requested brighter lights to increase evening traffic, but others have warned that brighter lights could detract from the city’s village atmosphere.
The lights currently in use on Sierra Madre Boulevard and Baldwin Avenue are below recommended level, Public Works Director Kev Tcharkhoutian reported. Councilman Lee Cline noted that his recent analysis showed that 15% of the lights are not working, so the city will also replace burned-out bulbs and clean existing lenses.
Southern California Edison has agreed to install the new bulbs and more modern lenses at no cost to the city. The brighter lights would cost an additional $275 per year to operate.
