Defensive tackle Brad Monahan of California, who was carried off the field on a stretcher after suffering a neck injury with 10:42 to play during USC’s 27-24 victory over Cal on Saturday at the Coliseum, was expected to be kept overnight for observation at USC University Hospital.

But Monahan, who was expected to undergo a magnetic resonance imaging test late Saturday night, was not believed to be seriously injured. It was reported that he had feeling in his extremities.

“Everything appears to be normal,” said Kevin Reneau, Cal’s sports information director.

Monahan, a sophomore from Santa Rosa, was injured while tackling USC flanker Curtis Conway after Conway caught a short pass.
