Defending champion Mark O’Meara and Ted Schulz shot 64s Saturday and were tied for the lead through three rounds of the Disney Golf Classic at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

O’Meara, who won last year with a 21-under-par 267, and Schulz were at 196, 20 under par, after 54 holes. They were a shot in front of Frank Conner and second-round co-leader J.P. Hayes.

O’Meara had been a stroke ahead of Schulz but bogeyed the final hole.

“I’m doing everything pretty good,” said O’Meara, who had an eagle and seven birdies. “I had a lot of two-footers for birdies.”

Hayes, a rookie, and Conner, an 18-year veteran, are seeking their first pro victories.

Conner was a bit astonished.

“I have a 64-68-65 and I’m one behind?” he said.

He admitted dreaming of the $180,000 first prize. “It would get me back to broke,” he said.

Dave Stockton added a four-under-par 68 to his first-round 65 and extended his lead to two shots going into the final round of the Transamerica Senior Golf Championship at Napa.

Mike Hill shot a 66 to move into a second-place tie with Harold Henning at 135, nine under par. Kermit Zarley, who was one shot behind after 18 holes, fell to a tie for third with Jim Albus with a 70 in the second round for a 136 total.

Ireland’s Christy O’Connor Jr. beat Fred Couples, who shot a 73, by two strokes to lead a 2-1 victory over the Americans in the Dunhill Cup team competition at St. Andrews, Scotland.

Davis Love III landed in two bunkers and three-putted for a seven at the 13th hole and lost by two shots to Phillip Walton, who carded a 72. U.S. Open champion Tom Kite shot a 70 to edge Ronan Rafferty by a stroke.

Still, the U.S. team advanced to semifinal competition in the $1.7-million event. The Americans made it to a semifinal match with England on the strength of victories over New Zealand and South Korea. The United States tied with Ireland and New Zealand at two points, but advanced because of a better aggregate score of 640 strokes. Ireland had 648 and New Zealand 652.
