Rod Bernstine said he had more fun Sunday than he has had in a long time.

Bernstine gained a personal-best 150 yards and scored two touchdowns as the San Diego Chargers beat the error-plagued Indianapolis Colts, 34-14.

“The offensive line was doing a great job blocking up front, getting the initial push off the line of scrimmage and giving me holes to run through,” Bernstine. “It was fun, you know? Any time you can get in the secondary on those (backs), it’s fun.”

Bernstine, whose best previous game was 114 yards against the Raiders in 1990, scored twice during the first quarter.

Turnovers by the Colts (3-3) helped the Chargers (2-4) get two field goals by John Carney and a touchdown run by quarterback Stan Humphries during the second half. Two of the Colts’ five turnovers were on pass interceptions by safety Darren Carrington in the Chargers’ end zone.

A personal foul on Colt rookie Steve Emtman also set up a fourth-quarter touchdown run by Eric Bieniemy after Bernstine suffered a bruised shoulder.

“We played a complete football game,” Charger Coach Bobby Ross said. “Bernstine was. . .fantastic.”

Humphries completed 12 of 17 passes for 205 yards for the Chargers.

Colt quarterback Jeff George completed 27 of 39 passes for 318 yards and connected with Anthony Johnson on an eight-yard touchdown pass play during the first quarter and with lineman William Schultz on a three-yard touchdown pass play during the third quarter.

“We saw how hard you have to play in the National Football League,” Colt Coach Ted Marchibroda said. “Here’s a team that was 1-4, and you saw how hard they played and how well they played.

“We played that way initially, but somewhere along the line we lost our poise.”
