Opposition to Welfare Measure

In response to “Democrats and Unions Lead Prop. 165 Fight,” Oct. 7:

Your article made it look like a battle between the governor and business interests on one side, and the Democratic Party and powerful union groups on the other side, with the main issue being a struggle for power.

It is true that many of us in the business community support much that Wilson is trying to do. We must, however, urge defeat of Proposition 165 because of the impact that it will have on tens of thousands of children.

Harbor Interfaith Shelter provides food, temporary relief and counsel to more than 10,000 people each year. The majority are only temporarily in trouble, and not the welfare system abusers who have sparked proper demands for welfare reform. We know that cutting aid to families with dependent children by another 25% to around $500 per month--or the cost of a minimal housing unit--will throw as many as 60,000 children onto the streets. While this may not be intended by the governor, we cannot be parties to such massive child abuse, and must defeat Proposition 165.
