Two months away from playing in the 1992 Davis Cup final, the United States found out Tuesday that the 1993 draw won’t be easy.

The Americans will play their first-round competition March 26-28 at Australia, which lost to the United States in the 1990 final. Neale Fraser, Australia’s captain, was furious in 1990 when the Americans chose to play on a super-slow clay court.

Bob Cookson, U.S. Tennis Assn. president, said he expects the Australians to choose their fastest grass courts for the competition.

“This was just the draw we didn’t want,” he said. “But at least we have players who can play on any surface. Just look at the rankings and see what players we’ve got to choose from.”

Australia is host of the World Group match because the Americans were at home the last time they played.

In the ’92 final at Ft. Worth in December, the United States will play Switzerland indoors on a medium-fast cement hard court, similar to the outdoor surface on which the United States defeated Czechoslovakia in the second round in March in Ft. Myers, Fla.
