CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SAN FRANCISCO : Veteran Activist to Head Sierra Club
The Sierra Club, a leading national environmental group, has named veteran activist Carl Pope as executive director, succeeding Michael Fischer. Pope has held a variety of positions with the Sierra Club over 19 years. Fischer had earlier announced his decision to leave the organization by year’s end. The Sierra Club, an outdoor organization and environmental lobbying group with 600,000 members, has its national headquarters in San Francisco. Pope, 46, is the fifth executive director in the group’s 100-year history.
