Selected City Council actions affecting Central Los Angeles in the past week.

CITY COUNCIL

POLICE STATION: Approved starting proceedings to buy commercial property at 3400, 3412 and 3420 S. Central Ave. to build a new police station in South-Central. The current Newton station at 1354 Newton St. is too small. The new facility will include a 23,000-square-foot building, a garage and a three-story parking structure.

DONATION: Accepted a donation of a 1984 Dodge van from Laidlaw Inc. to the Police Department. The van will be used by the Hollenbeck Division in Boyle Heights to take young people to court-ordered community service jobs.

HALLOWEEN PARTY: Approved spending $500 to help support an Oct. 31 Halloween Party for children living in the area of the 77th Street police station at 77th Street and Broadway.

CHINATOWN: Approved closing North Broadway between College and Alpine streets from 8 a.m. Nov. 21 to 8 p.m. Nov. 22 for the Chinatown Street Scene festival.

HOMECOMING: Approved the temporary closure of Walton Avenue between 41st and 42nd streets Nov. 13 for a Manual Arts High School homecoming celebration. The street will be closed from 1:30 to 7 p.m.

THANKSGIVING MEALS: Councilwoman Rita Walters requested the closure of several downtown streets on Thanksgiving Day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. while the Fred Jordan Mission serves meals to the homeless. The city will close 5th Street between San Pedro and Stanford streets, and Towne Avenue between 4th and 6th streets.

HOW THEY VOTED

How South - Central and Eastside representatives voted on selected issues.

GRAFFITI REWARDS: Approved accepting $20,000 from private companies to fund rewards to residents who turn in graffiti vandals. Patrick Media Group Inc. and Gannett Outdoors gave $10,000 each. Passed: 13-0. Voting yes: Richard Alatorre, Mike Hernandez, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Walters. Joan Milke Flores was absent.

STAY IN SCHOOL PROGRAM: Approved a proposal by Alatorre to accept an additional $1 million from the Department of Water and Power to continue the Youth Service Academy Program. The program provides city jobs to at-risk high school students who remain in school. Passed: 13-0. Voting yes: Alatorre, Hernandez, Ridley-Thomas and Walters. Flores was absent.
