A Los Angeles police officer was arrested Saturday morning at his Santa Clarita home on charges of holding his wife captive and “threatening to kill her,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Jeffrey Jerome Carter, 39, was taken into custody at 12:30 a.m. on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and making terrorist threats, Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Spear said. Carter’s wife, Gail, 32, filed a complaint Friday at the Santa Clarita sheriff’s station, saying that he had held her captive and threatened to kill her that day.

“The incident apparently stemmed from a long-running marital conflict,” Spear said.

Gail Carter was not injured in the incident.

Carter, a 13-year department veteran, is a patrol officer in the North Hollywood Division, Police Lt. Gary Hallden said.

“We haven’t taken any official action yet because he is in sheriff’s custody,” Hallden said.

Carter was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, Spear said.
