1. TERROR CRUISE

More than 50 volunteers with the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Monica will lift your spirits as they take you through three levels of shipwrecked rooms. Thursday and Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. Admission is $2.

2. NEIGHBORHOOD HAUNT

23812 Friar St., Woodland Hills

Take a spin around or wander through Bob Koritzke’s fifth annual neighborhood haunt, with computerized skeletons, spiders and caskets moving around this graveyard of terror. Free admission.

3. MUSEUM OF UNNATURAL HISTORY

19554 Plummer St., Northridge

According to legend, when two halves of the Stone of Amon-Ra are reunited, they will unlock a portal to the underworld. The halves were buried separately. One was found in 1912. The other half was recently discovered--and the two will be joined together at the Big Brothers’ Museum of Unnatural History from Tuesday through Sunday. The museum (in an abandoned warehouse) will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight, and Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children. 4. NIGHTMARE ON HERRICK AVENUE

David M. Gonzalez/Pacoima Recreation Center, 10943 Herrick Ave., Pacoima

The Pacoima Community Youth Cultural Center, an anti-drug and -alcohol group targeting at-risk youths, will raise funds at its third annual Clean and Sober Carnival. The youth group’s haunted house, torture chamber and graveyard--with a horde of repulsive zombies--will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

5. HALLOWED HAUNTING GROUNDS

4343 Babcock Ave., Studio City

It’s just another Oct. 31 for the folks on Babcock Avenue, where ethereal ghosts haunt a graveyard display. There are also crypts, shrouded figures and special effects. Dare to peek into the haunted nursery and seance rooms, where a phantom organist entertains. For 20 years, fictitious bloodcurdling creatures have come alive at Gary Corb’s house. Admission is free.

6. HOLLYWOOD CEMETERY

6000 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood

For those who prefer to have their spirits haunted during daylight hours, the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles will provide its eighth annual Hollywood Cemetery Walking Tour on Saturday. The tour will stop at tombstones and grave markers of the famous and infamous--among them horror movie star actor Peter Lorre--along with commentary on how they died and the architecture of the graveyard. Tours depart every 10 minutes beginning at 10 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission $7.

7. HALLOWEEN HAUNT

206 E. Wilson Ave., Glendale

Stroll through a mad scientist’s body-parts room, funeral parlor, mausoleum, haunted mine shaft, spooky dungeon and indoor swamp crawling with creepy creatures. This maze of scream-filled corridors is sponsored by the Glendale Family YMCA. Tours run nightly from 6 to 10 p.m. with admission of $5.50.

8. SANITARIUM MADNESS

La Vina Sanitarium, 3900 N. Lincoln Ave., Altadena

Members of the Pasadena Junior Chamber of Commerce is transforming these vacant buildings--on the site of the old La Vina Sanitarium--into a monster madhouse. Theatrically created illusions and fantasies will be in full swing by the witching hour. Festivities include costume contests and music played by a disc jockey, from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. Admission is $17 per person. Proceeds will be donated to the Jaycees’ community service programs.

9. HERITAGE SQUARE MUSEUM

3800 Homer St., Highland Park

Celebrate Halloween by investigating “The Haunting of Hale House,” a residence that dates back to 1887. The dwelling, long rumored to be haunted, is one of the eight Victorian homes that have been relocated to Heritage Square and refurbished. Admission will include tours of the entire square. Adults $5; teen-agers and sen ior citizens $3, and children 7-12, $1.

10. WAREHOUSE OF TERROR

10150 Lower Azusa Road, El Monte

The Vons Employee Assn. and four area high schools--Arroyo, El Monte, Mountain View and Rosemead--have transformed 39 rooms of a warehouse into eerie dungeons of fright. Ghosts, goblins and ghouls will provide chills and thrills Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m., Friday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 11 p.m. The price of this spine-tingling journey is $5, with proceeds being donated to participating high schools.

Many city and county parks departments offer supervised programs for safe celebrating, with activities including costume parades, contests, movies, carnivals, rides and magic shows. Call local parks for information.
