A Los Angeles police officer from the North Hollywood Division pleaded not guilty Tuesday to assault and spousal abuse charges for allegedly holding his wife at gunpoint and threatening to kill her.

Officer Jeffery Jerome Carter, 39, was ordered to return to San Fernando Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing Nov. 5 to determine if there is sufficient evidence to hold a trial.

On Sept. 28, the 13-year veteran allegedly tried to choke his 31-year-old wife, Gail, after an argument, Deputy Dist. Atty. Lori Dery said.

Last Wednesday, Carter allegedly confronted his wife at gunpoint in the garage of their Santa Clarita Valley home and threatened to kill her, Dery said.

Carter purportedly relented after his wife begged him not to kill her and talked about their 2 1/2-year-old foster son, Dery said.

Gail Carter spent the night in the couple’s guest room and contacted sheriff’s deputies the next day, after her husband left for work, the prosecutor said.

Carter, who was arrested Saturday at his home, remained in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail.
