Option Attack Leads Century to Another Victory

Share

Century continued its improbable resurgence Friday night, defeating Laguna Beach, 42-0, in a Pacific Coast League game at Laguna Beach High.

The Centurions (3-4-1, 2-1 in league) were winless after their first four games this season. Their offense, which was plagued by turnovers, was shut out three times and scored just one touchdown in those four games.

But with quarterback Ricky Odoardi running a new option attack, the Centurions rolled up 316 yards in the first half, as they built a 29-0 halftime advantage against Laguna Beach (1-7, 0-3).

“We just put this offense in last week against Trabuco and the kids like it,” said Century Coach Bill Brown. “It seems to be our style.”

Odoardi, who rushed for 122 yards on just four carries, broke six tackles on a 71-yard touchdown run and threw a 23-yard scoring pass to Abel Perez in the second quarter. Julio Garcia scored two touchdowns and added 101 yards rushing.

Joe Gomez and Jose Velasquez also scored touchdowns for the Centurions, who did not commit a turnover for the second week in a row.

Century is in a four-way tie for first place in the Pacific Coast League with Laguna Hills, Estancia and Trabuco Hills.
