PICO-UNION : Two New Centers to Help Riot Victims

Share

The Presidential Task Force on Los Angeles Recovery has opened “neighborhood opportunity centers” in Pico-Union and Mid-Wilshire to offer services ranging from small-business loans to consumer protection information.

David Beightol, executive director of the task force, said opening the center is part of the federal government’s effort to foster long-term economic development in the area. Through small business loans, “the goal is to bring growth opportunity to the city,” he said.

With the help of staff counselors, local residents will be able to apply for riot relief funds and small-business loans at the center.

The centers will house offices of the federal Small Business Administration, the Minority Business Development Agency and the Justice Department’s Community Relations Service Division, Beightol said. State and city representatives will also have offices there, Beightol said.

The Mid-Wilshire center, 3407 6th St., will have a Korean-speaking receptionist. Residents should call (213) 380-6237 to schedule an appointment. On Saturday, the center will throw a street party from 1 to 3 p.m. on Catalina Avenue between 5th and 6th streets.

For an appointment at the Pico-Union Center, 1809 W. 11th St., call (213) 251-7176.
