From Staff and Wire Reports
Bill Elliott needs a good run in today’s Pyroil 500 NASCAR stock car race to keep his pursuers at bay in the chase for the Winston Cup championship.
Elliott, the 1988 series champion, goes into the 500-kilometer event at Phoenix International Raceway leading runner-up Davey Allison by 70 points.
Rusty Wallace will start on the pole in a Pontiac. Allison will start 12th and Elliott 18th in Fords.
