A FORUM FOR COMMUNITY ISSUES : Platform : L.A. Teachers: ‘I Don’t Want Them to Strike’
BETH OJENA, She is principal of Coeur ‘D ‘Alene Elementary School in Venice.
We’re a special school because approximately 20% of our student body are homeless children (from area shelters.). We also receive approximately 100 children from Hollywood who are newly arrived immigrants, and the balance of the children range from Marina del Rey to the Venice area.
The possibility of a strike leaves me feeling very, very sad. I think that it is a lose-lose situation. We will do the best we can to provide some instructional program, but we have a very strong teacher staff here--they’re superb--and I don’t fool myself into thinking that keeping the school open in a strike compares to having regular classroom teachers.
