David Wheaton upset fourth-seeded Michael Chang, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, during the second round of the $2.1-million Paris Open on Tuesday.

Jim Courier, top-seeded and ranked No. 1 in the world, easily defeated Andrei Chesnokov of Russia, 6-3, 6-0, and Stefan Edberg, seeded third, beat Andrei Medvedev of the Ukraine, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.

Also during the second round, No. 14 Alexandr Volkov of Russia defeated Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 6-3, 6-4; Derrick Rostagno upset No. 13 Carlos Costa of Spain, 6-3, 7-5, and Michael Stich of Germany, No. 16, beat Magnus Larsson of Sweden, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.

John McEnroe, making perhaps his last visit to a tournament in Paris, beat Mark Woodforde of Australia, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the opening round.

In other first-round matches, qualifier Jim Grabb beat Gabriel Markus of Argentina, 6-3, 6-2; Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland eliminated Thomas Muster of Austria, 6-3, 6-4; Brad Gilbert routed Guillaume Raoux of France, 6-1, 6-1, and Arnaud Boetsch of France beat Francisco Clavet of Spain, 6-3, 6-3.

Chang, who made the semifinals here last year, said he could have played better against Wheaton, the lowest-ranked player admitted directly into the field at No. 58.

“I had way too many unforced errors,” Chang said.

Courier, two-time winner of the French Open, had little difficulty with Chesnokov, sweeping the second set in 21 minutes.

“I didn’t play well in Stockholm last week and it’s important to play well and get into the rhythm,” Courier said. “I haven’t played much this fall.”

After losing in the semifinals of the U.S. Open, Courier took nearly six weeks off before returning to play last week at Stockholm, losing during the third round to Henrik Holm of Sweden.

Edberg took only 22 minutes for the first set against Medvedev, but the 18-year-old came back to win the second by the same score.
