The Pittsburgh Penguins kept rolling Tuesday on a night that Mario Lemieux’s goal-scoring streak ended.

The Penguins beat the New York Islanders, 2-0, in Pittsburgh, but Lemieux was shut out for the first time this season, ending a 12-game goal-scoring streak four short of the NHL record.

“It’s pretty disappointing when you get that close,” Lemieux said. “It’s a record that’s been around for a long time. You know it’s going to end some time, but to get that close, it’s very disappointing.”

Lemieux also had scored at least two points in every Pittsburgh game this season. He took six shots Tuesday, four during the first period.

The Penguins went on their sixth power play with 1:42 left, but Lemieux was called for interference 45 seconds into the penalty and spent the rest of the game in the penalty box.

His best scoring chance came during the first period, when goalie Mark Fitzpatrick used a leg to stop his shot from close range.

Lemieux’s goal-scoring streak was a club record and tied for fourth-best in NHL history. The record is held by Harry (Punch) Broadbent, who had goals in 16 consecutive games for Ottawa in 1921-22.

Tom Barrasso (9-0-2) made 19 saves and set a team record with his eighth consecutive victory for the Patrick Division-leading Penguins.

Tampa Bay 6, St. Louis 4--Chris Kontos scored two goals, giving him 12 for the season, as the Lightning ended a four-game losing streak at Tampa, Fla.

Kontos, who had been out of the NHL since 1990 before making the team as a free agent, had never scored more than eight goals in a season before coming to Tampa.

Kontos’ first goal capped a three-goal second-period burst that broke a 2-2 tie. After the Blues scored twice during the third period, Kontos eased the Lightning’s second victory in as many games against St. Louis by scoring with 2:22 remaining.

Quebec 3, Hartford 3--Center Joe Sakic scored twice, including the tying goal with 6:40 left, as the Nordiques rallied for a 3-3 tie against the Whalers at Hartford.

Scott Young also scored for the Nordiques, who extended their unbeaten streak to 3-0-1. Zarley Zalapski, Nick Kypreos and Mark Janssens scored for Hartford, which is 0-3-1 in its last four.

Washington 4, Chicago 1--Rookie forward Keith Jones had his first NHL goal and assist to lead the Capitals to a victory at Indianapolis.

Washington took a 2-0 lead 2:35 into the game, scoring on its first two shots and sending Blackhawk goaltender Ed Belfour to the bench.

Edmonton 5, Ottawa 2--Scott Mellanby scored twice to lead the Oilers at Edmonton, extending the Senators’ winless streak to 11 games.

Mellanby tipped a pass from defenseman Dave Manson behind Ottawa goaltender Peter Sidorkiewicz for his first goal of the night on the power play. His second came when Sidorkiewicz bobbled a hard Greg Hawgood shot and the puck fell to the crease area. Mellanby was there to poke in the loose puck.

Oiler goalie Ron Tugnutt, who in two previous starts had one tie, came off the bench early in the first period after starter Bill Ranford was struck on the head by Laurie Boschman’s shot. Edmonton scored its third victory in a row.
