NHL ROUNDUP : Montreal Edges Detroit, 4-3

Two goals by Brian Bellows made it a happy homecoming for Jacques Demers, coach of the Montreal Canadiens, Wednesday night at Detroit.

Montreal extended its unbeaten string to nine with a 4-3 victory over the Red Wings, the team that fired Demers in 1990.

Bellows broke a 3-3 tie at 14:22 of the third period, poking the puck between Tim Cheveldae’s legs while Detroit’s Brad McCrimmon was out for holding Mike Keane.

New York Rangers 3, Philadelphia 1--Goaltender Mike Richter rebounded from his worst performance of the season to lead the Rangers at New York. Richter, who was pulled in Monday night’s 7-6 overtime victory over Buffalo, made 25 saves as the Rangers extended the Flyers’ winless streak to seven (0-5-2).

Vancouver 5, Calgary 5--Theoren Fleury scored three goals and Joel Otto scored with less than two minutes to play in regulation to help the Flames gain a tie at Vancouver.
