COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DAILY REPORT : USC : Milburn Falls Short of Expectations

Share

Glyn Milburn, a senior from Santa Monica High who will lead Stanford against USC on Saturday at Palo Alto, is on pace to finish the season with 2,233 all-purpose yards, which would leave him only 26 short of the Pacific 10 Conference record established by former USC tailback Marcus Allen in 1981.

But Coach Bill Walsh expected more from Milburn as a runner.

“Glyn’s a great football player,” Walsh said. “He’s a specialized player, though. He’s not necessarily your running back, as such. He does an outstanding job in returning, he’s an excellent receiver, he really makes people miss in the open field and he has great speed.

“(But) we haven’t got nearly the yardage out of him from scrimmage this year that I had anticipated. I thought he’d be a 1,000-yard rusher, but he just hasn’t developed. Although he’s having an outstanding year, I wish we could have done better with him.”

Milburn has rushed for 672 yards in nine games.

Linebacker Ron George, who leads the Pac-10 with 12 sacks and 20 tackles for loss, has 30 sacks in 31 games at Stanford. . . . USC’s freshman punter, John Stonehouse, on his older brother, Paul, who is Stanford’s senior punter: “I’ll be rooting for him to punt well, but then I’ll just hope that Curtis Conway returns it all the way for a touchdown.” . . . The three teams that have defeated Stanford--Texas A&M;, Arizona and Washington--are a combined 21-2-1. Texas A&M; and Washington are both unbeaten and untied.
