Brewers’ Listach Voted AL Rookie of Year
Pat Listach, who failed to make the Milwaukee Brewers’ opening-day roster, was voted the American League rookie of the year on Wednesday.
The Milwaukee shortstop was chosen first on 20 of 28 ballots and received 122 points in voting by from the Baseball Writers Assn. of America. Cleveland Indian outfielder Kenny Lofton was second, followed by Seattle Mariner pitcher Dave Fleming and Milwaukee pitcher Cal Eldred.
“I expected it to be a lot closer,” Listach said. “I didn’t know if I’d come in first or second.”
Listach hit .290 with one home run and 47 RBIs. He also stole 54 bases to break the Brewers’ rookie record of 30, set by Paul Molitor in 1978.
“It’s a long way once you think about it,” Listach said. “I expected to start the season in Denver.”
