Hollywood Park Could Be in the Cards Within a Year

R.D. Hubbard, Hollywood Park’s chairman and chief operating officer, hopes the card club approved by Inglewood voters on Tuesday could be open in late 1993.

Proposition E, which authorizes the track to put a card club in the existing six-story Cary Grant Pavilion, passed by a narrow margin. The final count was 13,234 yes votes (or nearly 52%) and 12,341 no votes.

“I wasn’t disappointed, I just wanted to make sure it passed,” Hubbard said. “But (the opposition) put on a strong campaign and they spent a lot of money the last 10 days. It’s obvious they swung some of the undecided voters their way, but we were always showing 46-48% in favor and a fairly high undecided vote.

“So, we picked up about a third of the undecided vote and they picked up two-thirds, but at least it put us over the top.”

Now that the measure, opposed by many horsemen, has been approved, Hollywood Park will remodel the Pavilion at an estimated cost of $15 million. Besides the card club, it will include retail shops and restaurants. Construction is expected to begin in the spring.
