Two women and a man who tried to cash a stolen check in a bank Thursday ran into the wrong teller--the mother of the robbery victim, Burbank police reported.

Kathleen Egan, a teller at the Bank of America branch at 303 Glenoaks Blvd. was approached by Khalia Shahid, 31, of Lake View Terrace, who tried to cash an $800 check made out to herself, Officer Jeff Goenner said.

But the transaction hit a snag when Egan “looked at the check and realized it was her daughter’s check,” Goenner said.

Egan notified police and stalled Shahid until officers arrived and took her into custody, Goenner said. Officers also arrested Jonathan Trotter, 21, of Compton and Katena Pettis, 23, of North Hills, discovered in a car in the bank’s parking lot. Shahid told officers they were with her, police said.

Donna Egan, 28, of Studio City was robbed Wednesday night on Ventura Boulevard when a man dressed in a private guard’s jacket asked to see her identification and then ran off with her purse, Goenner said. Egan spent the night at her mother’s house after the robbery and told her that her purse, including her checkbook, had been stolen.

Goenner said Shahid, Trotter and Pettis were being held on suspicion of burglary and were scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Burbank Municipal Court.
