FISHING / DAN STANTON : Mexico Trip Is Bountiful for Angler

A member of the King Harbor Marlin Club had the winning entry in the Cabo San Lucas Bisbees Marlin Tournament Oct. 21-23.

Henry Rowan of Marina del Rey, who was aboard the Rowan III with fellow King Harbor Club members Wolfgang Naschel of Redondo Beach, Tony Stienhart of El Segundo and Tony Walsh of Marina del Rey, caught one of only 10 legal-size marlin during the tournament. A marlin had to weigh 300 pounds to be eligible for the competition.

Rowan was trolling six miles offshore and using 80-pound test line when he hooked the fish. He battled it for 3 hours 37 minutes before bringing it to the boat. The fish weighed 525 pounds.

Several days before the tournament, club member Tony Walsh caught a 520-pound marlin.

The Torrance Pioneer Club had its first ocean sportfishing trip Monday afternoon.

Forty-two boys and girls ages 6 to 9 caught a variety of fish aboard the Matt Walsh, which was anchored in Los Angeles Harbor. Glenn Jaynes, the club’s organizer and program director, and club members gave instructions on fishing techniques.

Los Angeles Harbor Sportfishing donated equipment and the use of the boat.

Full limits of bonito are being caught in all areas by anglers using bait and jigs.

The calico bass bite remains steady with most anglers catching half to full limits.

Marc Larson of Torrance, aboard the Matt Walsh, caught a 10-fish limit of calico bass that averaged six pounds.

Jack Frussman of West Los Angeles, aboard the Matt Walsh, caught a 10 1/2-pound bonito.

Redondo Sport Fishing and Marina del Rey have been reporting catches of halibut by anglers aboard their boats. Several of the fish have exceeded 20 pounds.

John Peterson of Santa Monica caught a 21-pounder. Jay Kadowaki of Long Beach landed a 15- and 20-pounder.

The L.A. Harbor boat First String returned Monday with 56 yellowfin tuna and skipjack. Dave Hess of Redondo Beach caught a 28-pound big-eye tuna. Jeff Gross of Torrance caught a 25-pound yellowfin.

The 22nd Street Landing’s Islander reported that its anglers caught 26 yellowfin and skipjack. Ray Hawkes of Torrance and Melanie Jones of San Pedro each caught a 28-pound yellowfin.

South Bay Catches: Robie Tinsley of Long Beach, aboard the Toronado at Tanner Bank, caught the whopper of the week--a 37-pound yellowfin.

David Fields of West Los Angeles, aboard the Spitfire at the flats, caught a 34-pound halibut.

George Dennis of Long Beach, aboard the Phanthom at Tanner Bank, caught a 30-pound yellowfin.
