PARAMOUNT : Sheriff’s Deputy to Patrol Campus to Deter Shootings
Paramount High School will have a sheriff’s deputy on campus in the wake of three recent off-campus shootings that left two students dead and another injured.
The Paramount Unified School District board voted unanimously Tuesday to pick up half the cost of the officer--about $25,000--with the Paramount City Council paying the other half.
Putting the deputy on campus is one of several recent measures to improve school security, including stationing two private security guards at the school entrance and prohibiting students from leaving campus during lunch.
In June, honors student Alfred Clark was gunned down in a fast-food restaurant across from the school the day before he was to graduate. In September, Sheila Lorta was killed by gang cross-fire in the street outside school. On Thursday, suspected gang members shot and wounded 16-year-old Herminio Munoz in a parking lot less than a mile from the school.
