Anglers Are Catching Their Limits of Calico Bass and Bonito

Bonito, calico bass and yellowtail were caught in abundance last week as anglers continue to benefit from the warm-water conditions.

Several anglers caught limits of bonito and calico bass, and yellowtail were caught at Horseshoe Kelp and off San Clemente Island.

A trip to Horseshoe Kelp proved bountiful for anglers aboard the Long Beach Sportfishing boat Victory. The anglers caught 10 yellowtail and limits of bonito. Several yellowtail were lost to seals.

Long Beach fishermen Bill Powell and Don Anderson each caught a 12-pound yellowtail.

The 22nd Street Landing’s New Hustler II fished off of San Clemente Island. Anglers caught limits of calico bass and 18 yellowtail.

West Los Angeles angler Sung Lee pulled a 30-pound yellowtail from the kelp.

The South Bay fleet has started searching for rock cod. Long Beach Sportfishing’s Reel Special worked shallow rocky areas off Catalina Island and caught 80 rock cod and a ling cod. Long Beach angler Pi-Ling Hisung caught the ling cod, which weighed 30 pounds.

Catches of tuna at Tanner Bank have slowed. Anglers have been catching an average of only five fish a trip.

Fishing off Catalina Island has been slow.

Sea creatures will be examined as Cabrillo Marine Museum conducts a workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The workshop will take a look at tide pool creatures and other coastal fish life.

Participants will view live marine life under microscopes, including sea stars and sea urchins.

The workshop is presented by the museum’s education staff. People who attend the workshop can also tour the aquarium fish exhibits.

Five South Bay anglers returned from a successful 16-day tuna trip to Baja waters aboard the Royal Star.

Torrance fisherman Casey Collins caught a 263-pound seven-ounce yellowfin. Long Beach fisherman Ken Bane landed a 108-pound yellowfin and Bob Kargbaum’s caught a 103-pound yellowfin.

Manhattan Beach fisherman Chris Yamada caught a 113-pound yellowfin.

John Strock of Redondo Beach caught a 100-pound yellowfin.

Janet Cadman at the Avalon weigh station reports that the season’s marlin catch has reached 221.

On Monday, two fish were caught aboard the Willie Time and one was released aboard the Pursuer.

Long Beach fishermen Phil Koggins and Willie Bakendells were aboard the Willie Time. Koggins caught a 194-pound marlin and Bakendells landed a 127 1/2-pounder.

King Harbor Marlin Club member Mike Wicen, aboard his boat Pursuer, battled a marlin for one hour 10 minutes. He used a mackerel for bait and 100-pound test line.

Wicen released the fish, which was estimated to weigh 150 pounds.

The Redondo Sport Fishing bait receiver, which is located in King Harbor and supplies bait to boats, was torn up by seals last weekend.

Glen Mueller, who operates the bait boat and receiver, said he has had to rebuild the receivers and nets several times this year.

South Bay catches: Nick Olson of West Los Angeles, aboard the First String at Tanner Bank, caught the whopper of the week--a 32-pound yellowfin.

Susan Schultz of Lawndale, aboard the Hitless Miss at Horseshoe Kelp, caught a 22 1/2-pound yellowtail.
