Baby Boomers Step Up to Govern

As a life-long Republican, I applaud your editorial (Nov. 4) in which you exhort Americans to “set aside their differences and past quarrels and set examples that intensify everyone’s practice of tolerance.” Clinton himself has reinforced this positive approach in his post-election statements.

Yet, in that same edition, on the facing page, there appeared an insulting, vindictive cartoon depicting George Bush and Dan Quayle as dead birds hung upside down. That was followed by another cartoon the following day showing Bill and Hillary Clinton arriving in an Oval Office full of cobwebs because “no one’s been here the last 12 years.”

Is this supposed to help me and other Republicans “set aside their differences” and join hands with the “new Democratic Party”? Savoring the victory is fine. But kicking people when they’re down is ugly.
