Share

The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy will dedicate a newly constructed portion of the 65-mile Backbone Trail at Saddle Peak and Stunt roads, near Mulholland Drive, with a ceremony and hike at 10 a.m. Monday.

The conservancy will hold a ceremony to honor Ron Webster, the trail’s master designer, and crews from the California Conservation Corps, the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, Passageway and the Sierra Club Trails Crew. The event will be followed by a two-mile walk on the new portion of the trail, led by hiking author Milt McAuley. Those who do not wish to hike will meet for lunch at Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas.

The trail, which when complete will begin at Will Rogers State Historic Park and end at Point Mugu State Park in Ventura County, has been under construction since 1975. Over the past two years, about nine miles of trail have been added.
