BIG WEST ROUNDUP : Nevada Rallies to Beat Utah State, 48-47

Backup quarterback Chris Vargas passed for 388 yards and five touchdowns in the second half to bring Nevada from behind to a 48-47 Big West Conference victory over Utah State Saturday at Reno.

Vargas hit Bryan Reeves with a 28-yard scoring pass with 1:12 remaining for the game-winning touchdown and the Wolf Pack, 6-4 overall and 5-1 in the Big West, held off a final threat by Utah State (4-6, 3-2).

Aggie kicker Sean Jones missed to the right on a 52-yard field-goal attempt with nine seconds remaining.

Nevada trailed, 47-35, but closed in on Vargas’ 24-yard touchdown pass to Reeves with 2:08 left. The Wolf Pack recovered an onside kick at the Utah 49 to set up the winning touchdown.

Utah State quarterback Anthony Calvillo passed for 428 yards and five touchdowns, three of the scores to Jim Ray.

Reeves finished with 178 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions along with a two-yard touchdown run.

San Jose State 28, Pacific 27--Nathan DuPree rushed for 200 yards and a school-record four touchdowns, the last with 4:25 left to give the Spartans a Big West victory over the Tigers at Stockton.

San Jose (7-3, 4-1) remained on the heels of Nevada in the conference standings.

Quarterback Troy Kopp of Pacific (3-7, 2-3) threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Turner in the fourth quarter, their 31st scoring pass play, setting an NCAA record for most touchdowns by a passer and receiver.

Kopp’s third touchdown of the game was the 85th of his career, moving him ahead of Jim McMahon of BYU into second place among NCAA passing leaders.

Kopp, who completed 24 of 44 passes for 273 yards, also threw scoring passes of 14 yards to Turner and 19 yards to Kale Wedemeyer.

Pacific’s Ryan Benjamin, who leads the NCAA in all-purpose yards, rushed for 177 yards, including an 84-yard touchdown.

DuPree, who carried the ball 37 times, scored on runs of two, eight, four and five yards, in addition to catching eight passes for 62 yards.
