City Honors Brentwood School Student for Tireless and Varied Volunteer Work

When Matthew Lieberman was a seventh-grader, his class took part in a community service project with the homeless. That assignment inspired Lieberman to try volunteering on his own outside the classroom.

Now a sophomore at Brentwood School, the 15-year-old Westwood resident was recently awarded a certificate of recognition for his efforts by the Human Relations Committee of the City of Los Angeles.

“A lot of people are afraid to get out there and help others,” Lieberman said. “I can always think of some project to go out and do.”

During the school year, Lieberman spends most Mondays after classes end working with mentally and physically handicapped children at the Help Group in Burbank. On Wednesdays, he helps cook meals and feed homeless people at the Ocean Park Community Center in Santa Monica. And on Friday afternoons, he alternates days between the Jewish Home for the Aging in Reseda and McBride School for handicapped and mentally disabled children in Mar Vista. Lieberman gives a lot of credit to Priscilla Temple, coordinator of the community service program at Brentwood School, for helping to steer him toward good projects.

“It is really time-consuming,” Lieberman said of his volunteer work, “but it is really a fulfilling experience and I love seeing the smiles on their faces.”

Lieberman hopes that he can also serve as a role model for other students. “Kids are so into themselves . . . it’s time to branch out and help others,” he said. “Students need to be more sensitive to the needs of others within the community.”
