No. 1 Miami and No. 2 Alabama remained on course for a Sugar Bowl showdown, and Florida State re-entered the national championship picture by rising to third in the Associated Press poll.
The re-emergence by the Seminoles has Miami Coach Dennis Erickson concerned.
The Hurricanes stayed on top with a 48-0 victory over Temple, receiving 61 first-place votes and 1,549 points from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters.
Alabama, which beat Mississippi State, 30-21, was runner-up again with one first-place vote and 1,483 points. Florida State moved from fifth to third with a 70-7 victory over Tulane.
If Miami (9-0) and Alabama (10-0) remain undefeated and 1-2 in the poll, they will meet for the national title Jan. 1 in the Sugar Bowl. But if Alabama loses, Miami could face a rematch with Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl.
“I’m never in favor of rematches. I just don’t like them and never will,” Erickson said. “If we’ve already played them once, why play them again? It’s not the NFL.”
Miami beat Florida State, 19-16, on Oct. 3.
