COLLEGE REPORT / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Bowl Chances Slim, Almost None for Bruins

UCLA, which has won its last two games, might receive a bowl bid by defeating USC Saturday at the Rose Bowl.

“At a meeting (Sunday) that the Pac-10 had there was some discussion about a potential for UCLA maybe in the Copper Bowl (which will be played in Tucson on Dec. 29),” UCLA Athletic Director Peter Dalis said. “But I think it’s a longshot, because Arizona State and Washington State are ahead of us in the standings.”

Dalis said he hasn’t campaigned for a bowl bid.

“Typically, you really don’t have to do that in this business,” Dalis said. “They usually get ahold of you and find out your interest. Rarely, do you call up and say, ‘Will you take me?’ ”

Dalis hasn’t had any contact with bowl representatives.

“If they were interested they would call,” he said. “I’ve been doing this 10 years and they’ve never failed to call if they were interested.”

Coach Terry Donahue agreed.

“It’s very difficult to predict with any accuracy right now exactly what the bowl picture is,” Donahue said. “Obviously, it’s a longshot, but I do think there could be an opportunity if a lot of different scenarios unfolded.”

Quarterback John Barnes sneaked into last year’s USC-UCLA game at the Coliseum without a ticket.

Barnes, who attended UC Santa Barbara last year, sat in the Trojan rooting section.

“I had an ex-girlfriend who went to SC and I used her student ID to get in,” Barnes said. “She went into the gate and put it back through the fence and I flashed it (to the ticket taker).”

Wide receiver Sean LaChapelle, who has sat out three of the Bruins’ last five games because of a rib injury, plans to play against USC.

“I’d (play) even if I had a busted leg,” said LaChapelle, who needs 39 yards to break Flipper Anderson’s school record of 2,023 receiving yards.
