ANTELOPE VALLEY : Contract Approved for Prison Water

Share

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a contract with the state Department of Corrections on Tuesday that will provide water for the future state prison in the Antelope Valley.

A state law passed in October, 1991, required the state to ensure adequate water supplies for the prison to avoid further depletion of ground water in the Antelope Valley. Under the agreement, the state will build a 12-inch water line to connect the prison with state aqueduct water supplies.

The state also will pay the local aqueduct purveyor--the Antelope Valley-East Kern Water Agency--$1.2 million in fees. That agency will operate and maintain the system to provide water service to the prison once the system is complete.

The prison will only be able to tap into ground water supplies in an emergency.
