NBA ROUNDUP : McKey Paces Seattle in Victory

Derrick McKey scored eight points in the last six minutes and Eddie Johnson came off the bench to score 28 points Tuesday in Seattle, leading the SuperSonics to a 100-90 victory over the New York Knicks.

Leading, 73-72, with 9:30 to play, the SuperSonics (5-1) took charge with a 17-7 run, capped by Shawn Kemp’s dunk, that made it 90-79 with 2:12 left.

Patrick Ewing led the Knicks with 25 points and 14 rebounds.

Houston 116, Sacramento 109--Hakeem Olajuwon had 34 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots at Houston. Olajuwon scored 15 points in the first quarter and 12 in the fourth, when Houston’s 20-point lead was cut to 106-100 on Randy Brown’s layup with 4:31 to play.

But Olajuwon scored eight consecutive points, allowing Houston to survive Sacramento’s 9-2 run at the end of the game.

Rookie Robert Horry had 23 points and four of Houston’s 14 blocked shots. Kenny Smith had 16 assists, one shy of his personal best.

Golden State 125, Miami 119--It isn’t often that a backcourt that averages 5-foot-9 1/2 will dominate an NBA game. But 6-foot Tim Hardaway and 5-7 rookie Keith Jennings combined for 48 points as the Warriors ended a four-game losing streak at Miami.

Hardaway scored 10 of his 26 points in the final three minutes, helping the Warriors pull away. Jennings had 22 points.

San Antonio 106, Cleveland 95--Dale Ellis scored 20 points and David Robinson and Lloyd Daniels each had 19 as the Spurs (2-4) averted their worst start ever with a victory at San Antonio.

Larry Nance led the Cavaliers, losers of three in a row, with 22 points and Danny Ferry scored 15.

Milwaukee 114, Atlanta 106--Frank Brickowski scored 10 of his 22 points in the final six minutes, leading the Bucks (5-2) at Atlanta.

Eric Murdock had 22 points and Alvin Robertson 20 as Milwaukee won for the third time in four road games.

Last season, Milwaukee was 6-35 on the road. Dominique Wilkins scored 34 points for Atlanta, the fifth time he has scored more than 30 this season.

Stacey Augmon, playing his second game, had 22.

Washington 101, Boston 97--Harvey Grant matched his personal best with 34 points, and the Bullets fended off a late Celtic rally in Landover, Md.

Reggie Lewis and Xavier McDaniel each scored 17 points for the Celtics, whose 2-5 start is the worst since going 1-6 in the 1978-79 season.

Chicago 124, Minnesota 103--Michael Jordan scored 32 points, Horace Grant added 24 and Scottie Pippen had 12 assists--all in the first three quarters--as the Bulls won their fifth in a row.

It was the second consecutive blowout for the two-time defending NBA champions, whose first four victories were by a combined 17 points.

Chuck Person had 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves, 0-7 against Chicago since joining the league in 1989-90.

Christian Laettner, Minnesota’s No. 1 draft choice, sprained the middle finger of his right hand early in the third period but returned to the game played at Minneapolis and finished with 17 points.

Indiana 128, Denver 98--Rik Smits had another big game against the Nuggets, scoring 27 points in 23 minutes at Indianapolis as the Pacers rolled to their fourth consecutive victory.

The Nuggets have lost five in a row, four on the road. Smits, the Pacers’ 7-4 center, has had the top three scoring games of his career against the Nuggets--34, 32 and 31 points.

Reggie Miller had 17 points for Indiana, and Pooh Richardson had 15 points and 12 assists.

Utah 108, New Jersey 97--Karl Malone had 29 points and 16 rebounds as the Jazz took command early in the second half at East Rutherford, N.J.

The victory was Utah’s 10th in a row over the Nets.

It was also the Jazz’s third road victory this season without a loss, the team’s best road start.

Charlotte 134, Dallas 111--Larry Johnson scored 21 points, leading six Hornets in double figures in the rout at Charlotte.

The Hornets lost starting forward Johnny Newman for five to six weeks when he fractured a bone in his left hand in the first quarter.

He entered the game as the Hornets’ second-leading scorer with a 20.5 average.
