George Bush’s Legacy

The recent requiem to President Bush was saddening. A President of this, the greatest nation on Earth, should never have to leave office as a loser; and this would not have to be so if presidential terms were six years without succession.

I have observed every presidential election since 1916 and headquartered in Washington for many years from the 1930s on. As a member of the National Press Club, I had the opportunity of observing presidents at close range. The stress and strain to which they were exposed were visible even after four years of service.

With a six-year term a President can serve to the optimum efficiency as well as physical and mental ability; and leave office with dignity and praise for achievements accomplished.
