Six Men Released Following Rape Arrests

Five Navy sailors and a civilian who were arrested on charges of raping two teen-age girls at the San Diego Hotel downtown have been released from County Jail.

They were released Tuesday night, although Deputy Dist. Atty. Elizabeth Porterfield said the investigation is continuing. The six men were arrested early Sunday and accused of raping two teen-agers in a hotel room, police said.

The men were identified as Maurice Pruitt, 19; Brandall Ashley, 21; Omar Wynne, 20; John Sanders, 26; and Robert Johnson, 21, all Navy enlisted men, as well as civilian Darrell Carter, 24.

Porterfield said the investigation is now focusing on possible charges of unlawful intercourse with a minor in connection with allegations made by one alleged victim, a 14-year-old girl.

The men were released when they were not arraigned within 48 hours of their arrest, as required by law.
