Armed Man Slain in Santa Ana
A man was shot twice and killed Saturday afternoon as he walked in a parking lot next to a local gun shop, police said.
The victim was identified by police as John R. Fountain, 50, of Santa Ana. Police said there was no doubt that he was the intended target of an unknown gunman.
The man was shot about 4:30 p.m. after a car wheeled behind him and into the parking lot at 2134 S. Main St. A passenger then got out of the car and fired several rounds, said Santa Ana police Lt. Earl Porter. The lieutenant said the victim was armed and apparently tried to return fire.
“There’s no real good indication of a motive. It appears it may have resulted from a dispute prior to the incident. Words were exchanged before the shots were fired,” Porter said.
Employees at Stanley’s Gun Room & Sporting Goods would only say that the victim was a good friend who often visited the store.
