‘92-’93 PREP PREVIEW: WRESTLING : TEAMS TO WATCH : EL MODENA
Coach: Alan Clinton (eighth year).
1991: The Vanguards were runners-up to Canyon in the Century League race. Uncharacteristically, they did not have an all-county wrestler in 1991-92.
Key returners: Josh Wagner, Jr., 112 pounds; David Wells, Jr., 135; Todd Cameron, Sr., 140; Ty Wynn, Sr., 145; Roger Martinez, Sr., 152; Ryan Hughes, Sr., 160; Chris Niez, Sr., heavyweight.
Key newcomers: Brad Carlson, Jr., 189.
Outlook: Thanks primarily to their great depth, the Vanguards were ranked fourth in the coaches’ preseason poll. No fewer than seven El Modena wrestlers are ranked among the top four in the county individual rankings. Wells had the highest individual finish of any Vanguard, taking third place at the Southern Section 4-A finals. Cameron is coming off a sixth-place finish at the section finals. Expect El Modena to challenge Canyon for the league title again. There are a couple of questions facing Clinton, however. That’s not all bad, as there are a number of wrestlers battling for spots at 103, 119 and 125.
