A 14-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday after his father found what appeared to be a pipe bomb in a drawer in the teen-ager’s bedroom.

The father called the Fire Department to his home in the 6600 block of Kiowa Road at 2:14 p.m. after discovering the device, Fire Capt. Craig Campbell said.

“The house is being remodeled and the father found what he thought might be a pipe bomb as he was cleaning things out and going through some furniture,” Campbell said.

The Orange County Bomb Squad evacuated homes on each side of the residence and removed the device without incident in about 10 minutes.

It consisted of a pipe about eight inches long and one inch in diameter which was packed with match heads and sealed on both ends. Its destructive force is not yet known, Campbell said.

“Pipe bombs can be extremely powerful,” Campbell said. “People have been killed by them.”

The teen-ager, whose name was not released because of his age, was arrested when he came home from school Tuesday afternoon.

He was being held at Orange County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of possessing an explosive device in a residence and possessing the makings of an explosive device, Police Sgt. Rick McKinney said.
