All Souls Day
I was shocked and very surprised to see the headline “Macabre Meal” over the picture of native people celebrating All Souls Day (Nov. 3).
It is the tradition of many peoples, including Central Americans, Filipinos and others to celebrate All Souls Day (Day of the Dead) at cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and to bring special foods to eat at the cemetery. It is a day of rejoicing that their loved ones are with God and an attempt to be with them and to remember them.
Yes, Ecuadorian natives would probably “share” their native food of black corn and bread with their friends and relatives as would peoples from other countries bring foods special to them. It is a day of happiness and celebration.
I feel your headline ridicules these people and, worse than that, puts, by the use of the word macabre , a negative connotation on what is a beautiful family custom.
