The board of the Ventura Unified School District on Tuesday supported the appointment of Acting Supt. Joseph Spirito as chief administrator of the district.

The board said it plans to officially appoint Spirito superintendent of the 15,000-student district at its Dec. 15 meeting.

The board tentatively agreed Tuesday night to award Spirito a two-year contract that will pay him a base salary of $84,392. Spirito, 58, now serves as acting superintendent and assistant superintendent of educational services of the district.

Spirito said Tuesday that he will accept the job.

Spirito assumed the position of acting superintendent Aug. 25 after former administrator Cesare Caldarelli Jr. resigned to take a job at a suburban Chicago school district. He has served as assistant superintendent for the past five years.

The board said it plans to eliminate Spirito’s old position and give duties associated with it to other administrative offices. Officials said this would save the district about $80,000 a year.
