Bud Selig, major league baseball’s executive council president, invoked the “best interests of baseball” clause in ordering the New York Yankees not to interfere with the reassignment of three players to the new franchises.

The Yankees had contended the expansion draft was invalid because the Florida Marlins have not compensated them for the territory that belonged to the Yankees’ Ft. Lauderdale farm team. In the draft, New York lost third baseman Charlie Hayes and catcher Brad Ausmus to the Colorado Rockies and outfielder Carl Everett to the Marlins. Tim McCleary was hired by the Yankees as assistant general manager for baseball operations.
