Fare Is Not Fowl at Club Veg’s Dinner

Share

Forget the turkey. How about a juicy slice of stuffed pumpkin? No? Then what about the Thanksgiving buckwheat pilaf? Yum.

Today is the first Thanksgiving feast for Club Veg of San Diego, a group of 65 vegetarians who meet twice a month to support each other’s humane and healthy dietary habits, as well as to get together for wholesome fun.

Thus it is that Club Veg’s first Thanksgiving will not be without its own turkey.

It’s just that the turkey, named Torrey (as in the pine trees) will be alive, the guest of honor, and the only stuffing (made of succotash) will go into the pumpkin.

Torrey was purchased earlier this week by Coral Kingwell-Dina, president of the fledgling vegetarian club, who made a temporary home for the bird in the back of her pickup and who might end up keeping it as a pet.

It’s a good thing the hand-raised turkey (gender unknown so far) won’t be found ready for carving, since Kingwell-Dina’s daughter has been forming a fowl friendship with the bird.
