THOUSAND OAKS : Cal Lutheran Gets $714,138 Grant

Share

Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks has received a $714,138 federal grant to encourage disadvantaged high school students to obtain a degree in mathematics or science.

The money will be used to pay for 50 high school students from Ventura and Los Angeles counties to attend a six-week residential program at the private university starting in June, school officials said.

During the course, students from low-income families will receive academic instruction in math and science and will be guided toward careers that emphasize the use of math and science. University officials also will help the students prepare to meet college admission requirements.

The summer program will be offered for three years, officials said.

Students eligible for the program must be from low-income families and have parents who have not graduated from college. The students must also take at least one high school course in math or science, officials said.

Cal Lutheran was one of only 15 schools in the southwestern region of the nation selected to receive funding under the Math/Science Upward Bound program, offered by the U.S. Department of Education.
