Students Gain in Split District

The whole argument over the San Fernando Valley School District split is about money and power.

If you look at the groups who oppose the split, you will see that they would lose some of their power: The teachers union would lose votes, the school district would lose seats, students and funds.

But what about the students? They can only gain by a split from that overblown, red-tape-tied school board over the hill. They are taxed without representation--the inadequate representation they did have was taken away from them in redistricting.

How intelligent is a board that lobbies for building funds when schools sit vacant? How do you explain to your kids that their “representatives” are fighting their “teachers” in court while their school system is going bankrupt.

C’mon, it’s time to take back our government and see to it that it works for us. As our elected officials fight for power, it’s the student body that will lose the war.
