ART/LA92 a Mixed Bag for O.C. Artists

Stuart Katz of Laguna Beach, one of the dealers from Orange County who participated in ART/LA92, says he “did very, very well,” having sold about two dozen of the 40 pieces he exhibited.

Most were relatively inexpensive paintings by an emerging artist, Pam Wilson. Still, Katz said that even after deducting the $4,000 it cost him to rent display space and meet other expenses, he brought home a tidy profit.

“(It was) beyond anything I could have expected for a first-time out affair,” said Katz, who also exhibited works by William Anthony, Sandow Birk and Yolande McKay, and who said he plans to take part again next year.

Less sanguine was Steve Korwin, an artist from Laguna Hills who said he isn’t sure if he’ll go back. Korwin, who showed only his own paintings, said he sold only two of the six on display and made about $1,000.

He agreed with Katz, however, that the exposure was beneficial. “I make a lot of contacts with people who want to see more (of my) work and a lot of other galleries expressed interest, so from that stand point, it was a success,” Korwin said.

The Charles Whitchurch Gallery of Huntington Beach also participated but its representatives could not be reached Monday.
