OXNARD : Students Displaced by Weekend Fire
About 100 Oxnard High School students have been temporarily displaced from their classrooms as a result of a weekend fire that heavily damaged a portion of their school.
Until the two classrooms damaged in Saturday’s fire are repaired, students will have to attend class in the school’s library, computer room and whatever empty classrooms are available, said Principal Rick Rezinas.
He said one of the damaged classrooms should be fully repaired and opened by the end of the month. The second classroom will be ready by February.
School officials were busy Monday assessing what textbooks and materials were lost in the fire, while insurance investigators surveyed the damage to the school building.
The fire, which Oxnard Fire Department officials believe may have been intentionally set, caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, gutting two rooms and causing extensive water damage to another.
“We did find gang graffiti in one of the classrooms,” said Brad Windsor, Oxnard fire inspector, adding that the fire started in a book closet in one classroom.
Insurance will cover the costs of the fire damage, school officials said.
