Retired Judge Joseph A. Wapner, who hands down decisions on the television series “The People’s Court,” has been elected president of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, a Jewish educational center in Simi Valley.

He assumed the post last Thursday after being chosen by the institute’s 50-member board of directors.

Wapner and his wife Mickey have been affiliated with the Brandeis-Bardin Institute since the late 1960s, and their three children have participated in programs at the center. They donated funds to renovate and expand the institute’s library.

More than 2,500 people annually attend programs at Brandeis-Bardin, located on 3,000 rustic acres. The institute, founded in 1941, took its name from the late U. S. Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis, who inspired its creation, and Shlomo Bardin, the founding director.

Before joining the television show, Wapner was a judge for 20 years on the Los Angeles County Municipal and Superior courts. He is a past president of the California Judges Assn.
