PACOIMA : Drugs Ruled Out in Metrolink Death

A Los Angeles city street maintenance truck driver who was killed in a Nov. 25 collision with a Metrolink train in Pacoima was drug and alcohol-free at the time of the accident, a Los Angeles County coroner’s spokesman said Monday.

An autopsy that was completed last week determined that Jaime Farias, 37, of Los Angeles, died of “massive traumatic injuries due to the blunt force of the impact” caused when the train, traveling 77 m.p.h., hit his truck broadside as Farias drove over an unmarked crossing.

The results of the toxicology report released Monday rules out the possibility that Farias was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he was killed, said coroner’s spokesman Scott Carrier.

“Everything was negative,” Carrier said of the toxicology report.

Investigators have still not determined why Farias was crossing the tracks as the train approached.

Farias was the only fatality in the accident that derailed the train and resulted in minor injuries suffered by 12 train passengers. Two passengers were taken to a hospital for treatment.
